As part of the Chardham Yatra, spiritual seekers travel to the Char Dham Yatra in India. It refers to the journey to four sacred Hindu shrines located in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand – Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. These four shrines are considered the most sacred and revered sites in Hinduism. Two Sanskrit words combine to create the word "Chardham" – “Char” means four, and “Dham” means place or abode. The name Chardham literally means ” the abode of four places.” According to Hindu mythology, Adi Shankaracharya founded these four pilgrimages in the 8th century AD. According to Hindu mythology, visiting these holy sites can help one cleanse his or her sins and lead to moksha (liberation). Each of the four shrines in the Chardham Yatra has its own unique history and legend associated with it. It is considered a religious and spiritual pilgrimage by Hindus. After the Mahabharata war, it is said that Lord Shiva himself appeared here as a bull when the Pandavas sought his blessings. For example, Badrinath is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, while Kedarnath is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
